Fix Yourself Before You Fix Your Funnel

The advice is always about the strategy. Maria Garcia says that is exactly backwards.

The advice you keep getting is incomplete

Every marketing newsletter, every business coach, every mastermind call eventually lands on the same prescription: tighten your offer, fix your ads, get on more stages, grow your list. And look, none of that is wrong exactly. But it is incomplete in a way that can cost you years.

Maria Garcia learned this firsthand. She is a nutrition coach based in New Jersey, a stroke survivor who spent 15 years rebuilding her body from nearly complete paralysis, and a returning guest on the show. When she came back on for the full episode, she was not just sharing an update. She was sharing a reframe that I think a lot of capable, hardworking service providers genuinely need to hear.

Her exact words at the end of our conversation: "Focus on becoming a better you. Become somebody who can handle what it means to be an entrepreneur, because not everybody can do that."

That is not a soft, feel-good finish. That is the whole point.

A great plan run by an unprepared version of you still does not work

Maria walked me through what happened when Meta's AI update dismantled the ad targeting strategy she had built. She had something working, specific audiences, good results, and then the platform flipped a switch and handed control to its own algorithm. Leads dropped off. Quality fell. She stopped the ads entirely while she figured out a new approach.

That story sounds like a strategy problem. And on the surface, it is. But when I pushed her on what was actually in the way of stepping onto bigger stages and pursuing more public speaking, she did not talk about booking agents or pitch decks. She said, "A lot of it is me in my own way. I have to work on myself internally. Without the internal, the strategy can be as great as anything and I still would not get results if I do not work on myself."

So here is the thing. Two different problems, the broken ad strategy and the slow movement toward speaking, and she traced both of them back to the same root. Not tactics. Not tools. Identity and internal readiness.

That is worth sitting with for a second.

The Resilience principle is the foundation, not the bonus round

In the Prime Performance Process, Resilience is the first principle for a reason. It is not something you circle back to after you have the business figured out. It is the ground everything else stands on. And what Maria is describing, doing the internal work before you scale the external strategy, is exactly what Resilience looks like in practice for a service provider.

She spent 15 years rebuilding her body and her identity before she ever started coaching other people. She did not shortcut the personal work and then try to teach from a gap. She earned the understanding from the inside out. And even now, with a three-month flagship program, a book chapter dropping in The Change with Jim Lutz and Jim Britt, and a growing brand at genuinelymaria.com, she will tell you she is still working on how she sees herself.

That kind of honesty is not a weakness. That is what it actually looks like to take the internal work seriously.

What seasons have to do with this

We also talked about the idea of seasons in business and in the body. Maria put it simply: ask yourself what is required right now. Not what everyone else is doing, not what the algorithm rewards, but what your specific season actually calls for.

I have thought about this the same way since my strength and conditioning days. In preseason you push hard and build capacity. In season you compete and manage recovery carefully. In the playoffs you leave everything on the field. And in the offseason you rest, repair, and come back ready. Trying to train at playoff intensity in the offseason is how you get hurt. Trying to rest your way through a playoff run is how you get eliminated.

Your business works the same way. The question is not just "what should my strategy be?" The question is also "am I in a season that requires me to build myself first, before I try to build the next funnel?"

For a lot of people reading this right now, the honest answer is yes.

Hope is not a strategy, but neither is hustle without self-awareness

Maria made a point about social media that I want to make sure lands the right way. She said that posting content and hoping the algorithm finds the right people is just hoping. And she is right. Passive presence is not a plan.

But the flip side is also true. Hustling harder on the external stuff while skipping the internal work is its own version of hoping. You are hoping that activity alone will produce results, even if the person running all that activity is not yet ready to handle what comes from it.

Pay attention to what works for you. That has always been the throughline here. And sometimes what works is pausing on the next tactic long enough to ask whether you are actually ready for it.

Your next step

If any of this is landing, I want to point you at something concrete. The Prime Performance Process has six principles, and Resilience is the first one for exactly the reason Maria named. You can take the free 6-Principle assessment at /assess and see where your foundation actually stands right now.

Because the goal is not just to survive the side hustle. The goal is to become the version of yourself who can handle what comes after it.

A great plan run by an unprepared version of you still does not get results.
