Passion Plus Consistency Plus Integrity Equals Legacy

Erica Christ built FMR Wellness one private session at a time over twenty years. Here is what her story reveals about clarity, resilience, and the slow work that actually lasts.

There was a moment in my conversation with Erica Christ that I keep coming back to.

She described those early years of building her Pilates practice, working as a registered dietitian during the day, running her studio in the evenings, teaching sixty hours a week at one point, and she said something that was so honest it almost stopped me cold. She said in those early years, it was not about making money. It was more about not losing money.

I think a lot of us in the service world have been exactly there, and not many people say it out loud. So I appreciated that. And I want to use that moment as the entry point for what I think Erica's story is really teaching us.

You can check out the full interview in the full episode, but even if you never press play, I want you to get the lessons, because they are worth sitting with.

What twenty years of staying the course actually looks like

Erica is a registered dietitian, a diabetes educator, and a classically trained Pilates instructor. She found Pilates through her own injury and her own body, and when she felt how much it worked for her, she knew she had to share it. That is it. No market research. No gap analysis. Just a genuine connection to the work and the conviction to teach it.

What she built from that starting point is two private studios, one-on-one sessions only, a medically grounded approach to movement, and a reputation earned entirely by word of mouth, one client at a time, over twenty years.

No franchise. No trendy rebranding every few years. No chasing whatever format was getting attention at the moment.

And now she is bringing her daughter Julia into the business and building a succession plan that is every bit as intentional as everything else she has ever done. Julia, who grew up watching her mom teach sometimes in her pajamas in the evenings, has completed her classical Pilates certification and has her own studio space to develop, rooted in the same foundation her mom built, with a fresh perspective for a new generation.

That is a full-circle story. And it does not happen by accident.

She taught the why before the what

Here is what I think Erica's actual secret is, and she described it without really naming it directly.

She always led with curiosity. Her approach with every single client was to ask: tell me about you. Tell me what is going on. Why are you here? What are your goals? Not okay, here is the program, let us get started. Curiosity first, every time.

She educated clients on what they could do inside the studio and how to carry it out into their daily lives. She kept showing up and explaining why Pilates mattered, why the body needed this kind of intentional work, why the classical method held up even when the trends did not.

The depth of her understanding gave her clients something to hold on to. And that is what kept them coming back and sending their friends along too.

Julia described it in her own way when she talked about wanting people to feel the mind-body connection, the control, the awareness in every part of their body, even just sitting in a chair, really feeling it, being intentional.

Awareness is the whole product. That is the culture Erica built.

Where the Prime Performance Process shows up

I want to connect this to a couple of principles from the Prime Performance Process because I think they are showing up really clearly in Erica's story.

Principle three is clarity. Erica knew exactly what she stood for from day one. Classical Pilates, one-on-one, medically grounded, no shortcuts. That clarity protected her from every shiny trend that came along over twenty years because she already had her answer. She did not need to evaluate each new thing that showed up. Her conviction did that work for her.

Principle one is resilience. And I want to frame it a little differently than I usually do here. Resilience for Erica was not just bouncing back from hard moments. It was staying the same through twenty years of an industry that kept changing around her. That is a different kind of endurance. That is the long, unglamorous, quiet work that most people do not see from the outside.

She also carried a real fear that classical Pilates as a practice could just disappear, that the industry would keep chasing trends and eventually the slow, intentional, one-on-one method she believed in would get squeezed out. Sitting with that fear while continuing to show up anyway, that is resilience in its most honest form.

And then there is this third idea that kept coming back to me throughout the whole conversation. Before you can perform well, you have to know what is actually happening inside the system you are working with. Whether that is your body, your business, or your clients and customers, you have to take inventory before you can take action.

Erica built a whole career on that idea. She asks before she prescribes. She listens before she teaches. That is clarity and optimization working together, and it is honestly one of the cleanest examples of it I have ever had on the show.

The question she has been answering for twenty years

So here is what I want you to sit with after this one.

What are you building right now? And is it something worth passing down? Not just in terms of money or assets, but in terms of what you stand for, the reputation you are earning, the trust you are building one interaction at a time.

Passion, done with consistency and integrity over a long enough timeline, becomes a legacy. Erica did not set out to build a legacy. She just kept showing up, kept teaching the why, kept trusting the work, and twenty years later the work is outlasting her.

That is rare. And it is worth paying attention to.

If this landed for you and you want to dig deeper into what clarity and intentionality actually look like inside your own business, I have a free four-day training over at primeperformance.live/training that walks you through the Prime Performance Process and helps you figure out where the real gaps are. Go check it out and see what comes up for you.
